River Room wins at 2024 Wood Awards
Established in 1971, the Wood Awards aim to recognise, encourage and promote outstanding wood design, craftsmanship and installation. For 2024, the competition featured ten categories divided into Buildings and Furniture & Objects, spotlighting projects that blend artistry, functionality and sustainability. With an ever increasing focus on environmental responsibility, wood has emerged as a standout material in construction as it generates low-carbon, high quality buildings.
The College’s new River Room is the 2024 winner in the education and public sector with judges commenting that “the building’s beautiful finish is a testament to significant design detailing and coordination, including the creation of 525 individual structural connection details. Timber connections draw on traditional carpentry joints, such as dovetails and mortices, resulting in a startlingly low amount of steelwork.”
The long awaited café by the River opened just over a year ago, and continues to be a popular choice for students, staff and Fellows.
