The Role

The role of Bursar is integral to the ongoing success of Clare College as an outstanding centre for teaching, learning and research. The Bursar plays a crucial role in the College’s leadership, ensuring excellence in operational delivery while also contributing to the College’s future development. The Bursar is the senior non-academic Fellow of Clare College, with overall responsibility for the College’s finances and investments; estates and properties; catering and conferencing; information technology; HR; legal and compliance; risk management; and other professional services functions.

The College is seeking an exceptional individual who shares its deep commitment to academic endeavour within its historic collegiate setting and embraces the values identified by the community: excellence; equality, diversity and inclusion; openness, open-mindedness and fairness. With outstanding leadership and management skills, you will be comfortable working within the collegiate environment, capable of building and sustaining high levels of commitment in the teams for which you are responsible and delivering agile and efficient services for the College.

Clare College has a long and distinguished history, dating back to 1326. Located in the heart of Cambridge city centre, the College is extraordinarily beautiful and famed for its gardens on “the Backs” (the famous backs of the Colleges that overlook the River Cam). Our gardens are widely renowned as some of the best in Cambridge and are valued by all members of the College, as well as our guests. Today it is home to a vibrant and diverse community of 128 Fellows, 158 staff members, 300 postgraduate students and 500 undergraduates. One of the constituent Colleges of the University of Cambridge, it is known for academic excellence, as well as the friendly, stimulating and supportive environment it provides for students, staff, and its highly engaged alumni body. The College is in the midst of refurbishing and enhancing its seventeenth-century Old Court, a programme of work which will be completed in time for its 700th anniversary in 2026.

Salary

The annual salary will be between Point 73 to Point 77 on the University spine (currently £92,474 to £104,059).

In addition to the stipend, as a Class B Fellow the Bursar will be entitled to seven free meals per week.  The pension is USS with a contribution of 6.1% (employee) and 14.5% (employer).

Clare has established a very attractive shared equity scheme that allows Fellows to borrow up to 200,000 at preferential rates to acquire their own property.  The College also offers a housing loan scheme in additional to a shared equity scheme.
