Nigel and Judy Weiss Research Studentship

Thanks to a generous benefaction, Clare College is able to offer a Nigel and Judy Weiss Postgraduate Research Studentship in any subject, to begin in Michaelmas Term 2018. The closing date for applications is 25th May 2018.

The Nigel and Judy Weiss Research Studentship is intended to provide funding, including fees, for up to a maximum of three years for a student registered for the PhD degree at the University of Cambridge.

The studentship will cover the full University and College fees at the Home postgraduate rate, as well as Maintenance (currently set at £13,740). This is the equivalent of standard Research Council funding for Home students; some further funding for travel and research expenses may also be available.

The College welcomes applications from those with Home and Overseas status, but regrets that the amount available from the College for fees cannot exceed the Home rate. The successful candidate (if Home) will be expected to withdraw from all other funding applications on acceptance of the Nigel and Judy Weiss Research Studentship.

Applicants for the studentship must name Clare College as their college of first choice on the Board of Graduate Studies Application form for Admission as a Graduate Student, or be prepared to change college if offered the studentship. Applicants will be informed of the decisions reached by the Nigel and Judy Weiss Committee. A conditional offer will be made if the candidate is at that time studying for a Master’s degree; evidence of meeting the academic conditions set for acceptance to a PhD place will have to be provided once results become available. Election will be conditional upon admission by the Board of Graduate Studies.

Applications, addressed to the Graduate Administrator, Clare College, Cambridge CB2 1TL (email:, should include a curriculum vitae, details of applications for other grants, and the intended programme of research, including no more than one A4 page describing the proposed research project. Please arrange for two confidential references, including details of likely degree result if relevant, to be sent directly to the College.
