t: (01223) 333238
What is your subject and specific area of study?
Ancient Greek History (c. 1500 BCE on), all aspects thereof. My latest book is Democracy: A Life (Oxford U.P. 2016, new paperback edition with Afterword, 2018). My next book publication will be Thebes: Forgotten City of Ancient Greece (Macmillan & Abrams, 2020).
What makes Clare College such a good place to study your subject?
Clare has a wonderful tradition over many centuries in teaching and studying the Classics, and a flourishing contemporary Classics community: apart from the Director of Studies, Dr Charlie Weiss, and the twenty or so undergraduates and graduates, the Fellowship also includes Professor Anthony Snodgrass (Emeritus Professor of Classical Archaeology). Dr Dorothy Thompson, former College Lecturer, also retains close links with Clare. Library resources are excellent, and Clare's Library is of course very close by the University Library, and within a very short walking distance of the Classics Faculty building.
