Programme
This event aims to give Year 11 and 12 (S4+S5/NI Y12+13) students a taste of life as an undergraduate in Medicine and related fields. This event may be of interest to you if you are considering applying for Medicine, Biology/Biological Natural Sciences, Psychological and Behavioural Sciences, or Veterinary Medicine at Cambridge or elsewhere.
Date: Saturday 21st May 2022, 2pm-5pm
14:00 - 14:30 - Introduction to Cambridge, the application process, and studying Medicine and Natural Sciences in Cambridge with Professor Ed Turner, Clare's Tutor for Access and Outreach.
14:30 - 15:15 - Comparative Cognition Taster Session with Professor Nicky Clayton. In this session Professor Clayton will discuss memory and mental time travel: what it is, what it’s like not to have it, and whether this is something animals share with humans!
15:15 - 15:30 - Break
15:30 - 16:15 - Pathology Taster Session with Professor Heike Laman. Professor Laman will discuss Parkinson's disease and some of the research she is doing on some inherited cases of the disease, which occur in children and young adults, to understand why patients’ dopamine-producing neurons are dying.
16:15 - 17:00 - Q&A with Clare Students
Eligibility
The Online Biomedical Taster Day is free of charge and open to all students in Year 11 or 12 (or S4 or S5 in Scotland or Y12 or 13 in Northern Ireland) attending UK state-maintained schools.
