Clare College Cambridge

Applying for History

Admissions Requirements

Offers are based on A-level (or equivalent) examination results. A typical offer to read History would be A*AA at A level or 7,7,6 (42+ overall) in the IB or the equivalent in other educational systems. Candidates are not expected to have a particular combination of subjects at A-level (or equivalent). An A level in History is not a requirement.

Applicants who are selected for interview will be called for interview in the second or third week of December. You will be required to take an at-interview assessment under exam conditions.

Single honours History applicants will have two interviews each. Both of these interviews will normally be conducted by two History Fellows at Clare. One interview will be based on discussion of a piece of writing on a historical theme. The applicant will receive the text one hour before the interview. The second interview will focus on the history that you have studied at school.

During both interviews we seek to discover your potential for studying History at Cambridge. We want to know what kinds of history you enjoy, and for you to demonstrate your skills at understanding and engaging with historical problems. We aim to provide you with the opportunity to tell us your ideas, and to explore with you how to make historical arguments.
