The G R Elton Studentship: Studies related to History


Applications are invited for a G R Elton Postgraduate Scholarship in early modern British and/or early modern European history.  The Scholarship will cover University and College fees (but not maintenance) for a home, EU or overseas PhD student. It will normally be awarded for up to 3 years, to graduates who have been approved for a course of studies leading to a Cambridge PhD degree.


The postgraduate scholarship is open to candidates without regard to gender or nationality.  It will normally be awarded to graduates who have been approved for a course of studies in the Cambridge Faculty of History leading to a PhD degree.  The successful student will be expected to pursue his or her studies as a graduate member of Clare College.

Information to be submitted

Applications should include a curriculum vitae, details of applications for other grants and the intended programme of research (including not more than one A4 page describing the proposed research project).


Candidates should arrange for confidential references (including the likely degree result of an MPhil or MA, if it has not yet been obtained) from two referees, to be sent directly to the Graduate Admissions Tutor at Clare College, Trinity Lane, Cambridge CB2 1TL.

Further information

The G R Elton Scholarship is intended to provide funding to cover University and College fees, but not maintenance, for a student registered for the PhD in the Faculty of History.

A small sum of money is also available from the College's Research Expenses Fund, over the three-year period, to help PhD students attend conferences and travel in relation to their research. A letter of support must back applications for this from the applicant’s Research Supervisor.

Applicants for the scholarship must name Clare College as their college of first choice on the Board of Graduate Studies Application Form for admission as a Graduate Student. (This only applies to applicants who have not yet submitted an application form to the Board.). A successful candidate who had applied for, and been accepted by another Cambridge college, will be asked to transfer to Clare to take up the scholarship.
