Clare College Cambridge

Term Dates

In the past it has often been confusing for new students to get used to the use of the phrases Full Terms and Terms. Full Terms (which last for about eight and a half weeks) are shorter than Terms which last approx 10 weeks. It is important for you to understand this, because one of the conditions of getting your degree is that you are in residence (ie living in Cambridge) for a certain number of weeks per year. Basically, you should aim to be in College for the whole of every Full Term. This means that although lectures do not start until the first Thursday, you are expected to be available for Director of Studies meetings and other academic events from the first Tuesday. Similarly, at the end of each Full Term, you should be in Cambridge and available for meetings on the Thursday and Friday after lectures end on Wednesday. Of course, there are occasions when you have to be away, but you should always let your Director of Studies know if your absence is for more than a couple of days; you must also compensate by staying up outside Full Term to fulfil the Residency requirements of the University.
