Mellon Fellowship 2011-14
Clare to Yale
The Mellon Fellowship was established in 1932 by Mr Paul Mellon, Hon. KBE (Clare 1929) to promote friendship and understanding between England* and the United States, to encourage a mutual expression of interest in the life and thought of both nations, to advance the cause of education by the exchange of ideas of educational methods, and to create a special tie between Cambridge and Yale. The Fellowship offers opportunities for the further pursuit of study, for broadening mental and social horizens by travel, and to gratify interest and curiosity in America and American institutions.
(* Because of today's very mobile population, it became necessary to re-define "England" and the "United States" while still respecting the tenor of Paul Mellon's wishes. In consultation with colleagues at Yale, it has been decided that from 2009 this exchange will become international, and open to all current final year students and recent graduands.)
Two Mellon Fellows are selected each year from Clare, and two from Yale. The Fellowship is for a period of two years, but may be extended for a third year subject to the approval of the receiving institution. Such approval will normally be granted to a student accepted by the relevant faculty for a third year, and subject to satisfactory performance. The award covers the cost of accommodation, tuition and university fees, and pays a quarterly living allowance.
Final year students or recent graduates who wish to apply should submit a statement of not more than 500 words to the Tutorial Office. The statement should give your name and brief details of each of the following:
- academic record at Cambridge;
- activities while at Cambridge;
- reasons for wanting to go to the United States and interest in America and American Institutions;
- course of study to be followed at Yale (which needs to be 2 years in the first instance)
- plans for subsequent career or study.
You should also ask your Director of Studies (or other appropriate academic referee, such as a supervisor) to provide you with a reference.
Short-listed applicants will be interviewed on by the Master and a panel of Fellows.
It is particularly important that applicants should give careful thought to the course of studies they wish to pursue at Yale, and should be satisfied that there is an appropriate programme which they can undertake in two years. You could also discuss the question with past and present Mellon Fellows and other students from Yale who are now at Clare (the Tutorial Office will put you in touch).
Clare-Yale Fellowship Fund - Partial financial support for graduate study at Yale
The Clare–Yale Fellowship Fund was established in 2007 as part of the celebrations to mark the centenary of Paul Mellon’s birth and the 75th anniversary of the Mellon Fellowships between Clare and Yale. The Fund was made possible by donations from Mellon Fellows themselves. Its purpose is to complement the Mellon Fellowships and strengthen the ties between Clare and Yale by providing partial support to graduate students from Clare wishing to undertake a period of study at Yale, and vice-versa. Up to £3,000 per annum is available from the Fund; an award may be renewable for up to three years, subject to satisfactory progress. There are no restrictions on nationality or fee status for awards from the Clare–Yale Fellowship Fund; former Yale students currently at Clare are eligible to apply.
