ADC
(Amateur Dramatic Club)
There is a huge variety of drama on offer in Cambridge, and all sorts of ways of getting involved. The ADC is one of the main student theatres, in addition to the many colleges (although not Clare) who offer their own facilities. At the ADC there are an average of 16 shows per term put on by different societies. So with this number you can understand why we are always keen for more people to get involved!
There are opportunities for all sides of theatre production. Whether producing, directing, acting, costume, make-up, set design are your thing, or you’re more into lighting, sound, set construction, stage management, or you just want to help crew, or paint, then you will always be welcome.
Many people who join the ADC have never done anything like it before; just turn up and offer to help and you will soon be appointed a task! The Fresher’s shows are another good way and even if you are not a fresher and have done no theatre in Cambridge, you are welcome to join.
Some of the technical challenges have been:
Building a pair of moving curved stairs that lit up in different colours (Copacabana)
Building a safe but convincing guillotine (Panto - The Scarlet Pimpernel)
Abseiling an actor who had to enter through a skylight (What the Butler Saw)
Building a raked stage that was out (in the grid) in the first half and lowered in live (Kantan and Damask Drum)
Fitting a 16 piece band in a rather small Green Room (Company and Copacabana)
Building a cart that transformed into a platform safe to walk on (Oedipus)
